Bikini
2007
The photo shows a woman dressed in a bikini made of dynamite. The starting point for this photo work was the background history of the name “bikini”:
French engineer and swimsuit designer Louis Réard (who ran his mother’s lingerie shop in 1946) named his two-piece bathing suits after the Bikini Atoll, where the USA tested an atomic bomb on July 1, 1946. The pictures of the mushroom cloud went around the world - and Réard took the name of the atoll for his creation. The advertising slogan: “The bikini: the first anatomical bomb”. The scandalous fashion presentation took place a few days later, on July 5, 1946 in Paris.
The explosive impact of this unusual piece of clothing and its relationship to the historical event is the focus of the work.
